Summary: Oranges in Rosarno are for industry, the industrial model promoted in the area is viable only thanks to subsidies. Changes in allocation policy and lower purchase prices have made it more profitable to stop pickking oranges and to leave them on the tree, it’s enough to capture the subsidies. Seasonal workers in the region, and amongh them many undocumented migrants, found themselves unemployed. The stranglehold of agribusiness and of the mafia causes a severe crisis but alternatives are carried by the Equo South Network, a group of alternative producers who promote relocated production and distribution and solidarity actions with migrants.
