Summary: P. is a large food company in the region of Almeria. Most of its 4,000 hectares are dedicated to the export of iceberg lettuce over Europe. Far from suffering from the crisis the company has benefited doubly; the crisis has caused the disappearance of small and medium farms, leaving to the biggest ones an even more favorable market, on the other hand mass unemployment allows to put workers in competition and justify unpaids salaries, housing and transport. P. predominantly uses Latin American workers because “weaker … but less confrontational” and uses subterfuge to avoid to sign long-term contrats with seasonals workers.
